DONATING YOUR COMPUTER
There was a time when we could freely accept all offers of
donated computers and IT equipment regardless of age or
condition.
EU regulations now define redundant computers as hazardous waste
with strict controls on their disposal. The new regulations are
designed to tackle the increasing waste stream of electrical and
electronic equipment that is disposed of by landfill or incineration
and are known as the WEEE Directive. You can download a full text
copy from this page.
So if your computer is too old for us to REFURBISH for use by a
school or charity, it must be RECYCLED into plastic, metal and
glass. Community Computers is a charity, so our costs of recycling
have to be passed on to anyone disposing of a very old computer.
We currently accept working computers with a minimum 450 Mhz
Processor for refurbishing, but anything less must go into our
recycling stream.
Our costs for recycling a very old computer are £8 for the CPU
plus £8 for the Monitor and these are the charges we must pass on to
you.
Please check the specification of your computer to see if you may
incur a charge for recycling. If you need help call us on 01823
324002.
We do not wish to appear ungrateful to anyone thinking of
donating their used computer, but recycling costs have increased
with the new EU electronic waste legislation. You can compare our
costs as a voluntary based organisation with those of a commercial
company by visiting this website:-
